Rice harvesting has reached 68.88% of the sown area in Rio Grande do Sul. The data comes from a survey conducted by the Rio Grande do Sul Rice Institute (Irga) and released this Thursday (9). This percentage represents 614,405 hectares (ha) harvested, out of a total of 891,908 hectares destined for the 2025/2026 rice crop. The Outer Coastal Plain and the Southern Zone are the regions with the most harvested area, with 86.64% and 72.44% respectively. The Inner Coastal Plain accounts for 69.89%, followed by the Western Border with 68.82%, Campanha with 58.62% and the Central Region with 58.35%. The average production so far is 8,896 kg/ha, totaling 5,466,319.40 tons of rice harvested. According to the president of Irga, Alexandre Velho, the rice harvest in Rio Grande do Sul is nearing completion, as is the case in the Outer Coastal Plain. “The numbers for the 2025/2026 harvest reflect good productivity. Each year has its own climatic characteristics, but in the remaining 32% to be harvested, we will possibly see a drop in productivity figures in all six rice-growing regions,” emphasizes the president of the Institute. In the 2024/2025 harvest, at the same time, the rice harvest in RS had 71% of the area harvested and the average production was 9,102 kg/ha.
