The United States imported 67.83 million tire units in the first quarter of 2026, a 4% decrease compared to the previous year, according to data from the Department of Commerce (DOC), released this week.

Individually, imports of passenger car tires fell 3.2% during the period, to 40.55 million units; imports of truck and bus tires decreased 9%, to 14.09 million units; and imports of motorcycle tires decreased 11%, to 823,000 units. 

On the other hand, landings of aircraft tires increased by 14%, to 73,000 units; and those of bicycle tires rose by 20%, to 1.86 million units.

Between January and March, U.S. tire imports from China totaled 4.64 million units, a 33% decrease compared to the same period in 2025. Of that total, passenger car tire shipments fell 16% to 255,000 units, while truck and bus tire imports declined 48% to 222,000 units.

During the same period, the amount purchased from Thailand totaled 16.59 million units, a 9% decrease compared to the previous year. Of this volume, imports of tires for passenger cars represented 9.45 million units (-15%) and for trucks and buses reached 3.19 million units (-24%).
